Sungei Road Thieves Market

This is one of the most iconic places in Singapore that MUST not be missed if you are looking for a flea market. The Thieves Market consists of shops that sell items that may be one off, definitely unique and they are definitely cheap. Who says good things comes with a high price? At the Thieves Market, you can definitely find items that are high in quality yet reasonably priced.

If you are tired of Singapore’s glitzy, generic air-conditioned mega malls, head on down to the Sungei Road Thieves market to see the rural and local side of Singapore. At the Sungei Road Thieves Market you will experience how Singapore was like in the 1960s. The thieves market is 100% local from the stash they sell to the way they speak. It is not pretentious nor is it a place that lives and serves by the rule “Service with a smile, customers are always right.” Take a leisurely stroll and soak up the atmosphere. If you look a little more carefully at what the old men are selling, you might just find a gem amongst the junk. Just a little brief history about this flea market, In the 1960s, Sungei Road Thieves Market was known to sell contraband goods, secondhand goods and good that were rumored to be stolen by thieves from the rich people. Today, Sungei Road Thieves Market is one of the most iconic, authentic and unchoreographed place in Singapore. You can find things from vintage postcards dated back to the 1930s to barbequed iguanas for Chinese medicinal purposes.







The one food you must try when you are at the Thieves market is the famous Sungei Road Laksa. It is a legacy that started in 1956. Its distinct flavor and method of eating would definitely leave you craving for more.

Destination: Lau Pa Sat


Lau Pa Sat means ''Old Market'' in the hokkien dialect. This was Singapore's first wet market dating back over 150 years ago. Subsequently converted into a famous gourmet paradise. To get the full experience of the different kinds of food at Lau Pa Sat, we recommend going at night as the place is most lively at night.

We will recommend 5 of the must try dishes in Lau Pa Sat.

1) Laksa


This dish is of Peranakan origins which consists of thick rice noodles in spicy gravy fragrant with herbs and coconut milk.

2) Chilli crab



This dish originates from Singapore itself! Created in 1950 by a Singapore Chef called Cher Yam Tian. Mud crab are commonly used and are stirred fried in a semi-thick, sweet and savouring tomato and chilli based sauce. Despite its name, chilli crab is not a very spicy dish. This dish can be eaten with rice and the gravy is best eaten with ''Mantou''(chinese buns).

3) Satay


Also known as kebab in America. Satay is a dish of marinated skewered and grilled meats served with peanut sauce. Satay may consists of diced or sliced chicken,goat,mutton and beef. Served with raw onions, cucumber and ketupat(rice cakes).

4) Hainanese Chicken Rice


Hainanese chicken rice is a dish of Chinese origin most commonly associated with Hainanese cuisine, Malaysian cuisine and Singaporean cuisine. The rice used for this dish is cooked in chicken stock which will give a fragrant smell and flavour the rice. Chicken rice is best eaten with blended chilli and pounded ginger. For those who do not fancy spicy sauces or condiments can go for dark soya sauce with makes the dish equally tasty!

5) Ice Kachang (Local Dessert)



This is a dessert served in Malaysia and Singapore. Served with sweet flavoured syrup and jelly, this dish is sweet-tasting and is primarily ice served with 'kachang' The word 'kachang' is a Malay word for bean as well as nuts. There are other variety of ingredients that can be added to this dish such as grass jelly, sweet corn, durian syrup, chocolate syrup and ice cream!


There are many more local dishes available at Lau Pa Sat, a total of 120 over different food stalls! Some of the stalls are even open 24-hours. So after a night of fun and entertainment, drop by Lau Pa Sat for a late night supper with your friends!

Entertainment: Clubbing


A wonderful way to spend your nightlife in Singapore would definitely be clubbing. Today, we will be introducing to you one of Singapore's finest Nightclub, Zouk. The three old warehouses that make up the original Zouk were built in 1919 on the Singapore River. Thoroughly renovated, the houses now feature three interconnected clubs:

  • Zouk (1991), with a large dance floor and state-of-the-art sound and lighting, catering to a variety of artists



  • Velvet Underground (1994), a quieter, more relaxed lounge that plays house and soul.


  • Phuture (1996), a more avant-garde bar specializing in broken beats and hip-hop/RnB.


The clubs have proven popular with Singapore's party-going crowd and regularly attract performers from all over the world. Its famous Mambo Jambo theme nights are considered a must-go for a beginning clubber.



Zouk has been hosting its very own event ZoukOut since 2000. ZoukOut has also won the Singapore Tourism Board's 'Best Leisure Event Experience' award thrice, between 2005 to 2008. A beach dance party called ZoukOut is organised at Sentosa in December each year. On December 10, 2005, 18,000 people attended the party. ZoukOut 2006 outdone itself once again drawing a record 20,000 party-goers to Sentosa on December 11, 2006.

Destination: Singapore Night Safari


The Singapore Night Safari is the first of its type in the world. It is home to several rare animals like the African bongo, cape buffalo, striped hyena, blue sheep, golden jackal, and the one-horned rhinoceros. The thing that makes the Night Safari different from the nocturnal sections in other zoos is that you get to see the animals busy in their nightlife prowling and hunting for food.




There are 2 routes namely the east loop and west loop which totals up to 3.2km of which 2.8km is walkway. The safari park can be explored by the taking the walking route which is the Three Walking Trails or by Tram ride. You will cover 41 exhibits on foot and only 18 exhibits if you take the tram ride. There are also live animal shows available at specific timings and are a must see should you visit the Night Safari.



There are still some ways which you can make your experience at the Night Safari more enjoyable:

1) Bring an umbrella or raincoat as he rain is sometimes unexpected to its better to be prepared.

2) Bring along insect repellent to make sure that mosquitoes and other creepy crawlies really stay away although there are some measures taken to keep them at bay.

3)An ample supply of water and drinks are available at the stores as well.

4)Appropriate footwear(shoes) are recommended.

5) Lastly, you can approach any of the service staff and they will be more than happy to attend to your queries.

Where is Singapore?

Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, is an island country off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, 137km north of the Equator, in Southeast Asia. It is separated from Malaysia by the Straits of Johor to its north, and from Indonesia's Riau Islands by the Singapore Strait to its south. Singapore is the world's fourth leading financial centre and a cosmopolitan world city.

Why Singapore?

Singapore is a popular travel destination. Attractions such as the Integrated Resorts that are developed at Marina South and Sentosa in 2005. To compete with regional rivals like Bangkok, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Shanghai, the government has announced that the city area would be transformed into a more exciting place by lighting up the civic and commercial buildings. Food has also been promoted as an attraction for tourists, with the Singapore Food Festival held every July to celebrate Singapore's cuisine. Other annual events in Singapore include the Singapore Sun Festival, the Christmas Light Up, and the Singapore Jewel Festival.


Not only that, Singapore is currently promoting itself as a medical tourism hub: about 200,000 foreigners seek medical care in the country each year, and Singapore medical services aim to serve one million foreign patients annually by 2012 and generate USD 3 billion in revenue. The government states that this could create some 13,000 new jobs within the health industries.
